Get Top Eating Disorder Medical Care with Gaudiani Clinic's Dr. Sarah-Ashley Robbins, MD
It can feel nearly impossible to find quality eating disorder medical care in San Diego and elsewhere. You tell your medical doctor that you have an eating disorder, and they still weigh you, they still talk about what you should or should not eat, and they make judgments about your BMI. It discourages you so much that you avoid going to the physician until your health worsens and you end up in urgent care or the ER. There is hope. Gaudiani Clinic, founded by Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, MD, is the top eating disorder medical outpatient clinic in the United States.

Seeking Teen Eating Disorder Treatment? Meet UCSD Adolescent Admissions Clinician Andi Fessler
Is your teen suffering from an eating disorder? Seen pediatrician after pediatrician and not gotten a straight answer on what your child needs? It can be so heart-wrenching to watch your teen struggle and not know how to help them. In San Diego, you just want your kid to be having fun with friends, going to the beach, sitting around bonfires, and living a happy life. One wonderful resource we have is the University of San Diego Eating Disorders Center (UCSDEDC). They have an amazing adolescent program that uses the gold standard of evidence-based treatment for teens—Family Based Treatment (FBT). Andi Fessler is the adolescent admissions clinician for this program. I’ve known Andi for a few years (she actually used to work with one of my former doctoral students!). She is a compassionate, caring person who really empathizes with the challenges families face when a teen has an eating disorder. In this blog, she provides key information about the first steps families will take when they call UCSDEDC for help.
My Eating Disorder and Trauma Recovery: "Life Without Ed" Author Jenni Schaefer
Hello everyone! I am SO EXCITED to present my new interview with none other than Life Without Ed author and speaker Jenni Schaefer! Jenni’s book came on the scene around 10 years ago, sending shockwaves throughout the world of eating disorders. Eating disorder professionals and individuals suffering from eating disorders alike acknowledged that Jenni captured a way of looking at eating disorders that was elegant and accurate. Since that time, countless people have found solace in her book, reading chapter by chapter and literally nodding to themselves and saying, “she gets it.” It has been transformative in the eating disorder field. Both outpatient eating disorder therapists like myself in San Diego, as well as clinicians in higher levels of care have recommended this book as people start on their recovery journey. Jenni has since written two more books on eating disorders. PLUS, Jenni travels throughout the country, not only spreading her story of eating disorder recovery, but more recently on trauma recovery as well. She’ll talk about both areas in this interview. Enjoy!!!

Let's Talk About Binge Eating! Meet UCSD CHEAR Director Dr. Kerri Boutelle
Hi everyone! I’m so excited to discuss innovative approaches to binge eating treatment that’s happening right here in San Diego! I’ve interviewed Dr. Kerri Boutelle, licensed clinical psychologist and Professor of Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Public Health, and Psychiatry at University of California San Diego (UCSD). She is the founder and director of the Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research (CHEAR), and is affiliated with Rady Children’s Hospital. Dr. Boutelle is also the senior supervising psychologist at the UCSD Eating Disorder and Treatment Program. I went to a training at CHEAR by Dr. Boutelle, and I was impressed with how dedicated she is to eating disorder research and treatment. I also really appreciated CHEAR’s focus on binge eating recovery.
***Trigger warning*** This blog post interview does include the terms weight loss, overweight, and obesity in the context of explaining CHEAR’s integrative binge eating and weight loss treatment program. I do believe that Dr. Boutelle does articulate how their approach is very different than “dieting” and absolutely does NOT advocate extreme behaviors that could trigger eating disorder symptoms.
Meet San Diego Eating Disorder Therapist Edie Stark, LCSW
Hi everyone! Have you ever felt like you are suffering alone in your eating disorder in San Diego, and you don’t know where to turn? One great resource is private practice eating disorder therapist Edie Stark, LCSW (Licensed Social Worker). Her office is in Bankers Hill, which is in central San Diego. Edie is an amazing, authentic, experienced eating disorder therapist—plus she’s also a good friend of mine, and I want you all to get to know how smart and wonderful she is! Given her central location, she works with a lot of college students who attend universities like San Diego State (SDSU), University of San Diego (USD), and Point Loma Nazarene University. She even works with students from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). PLUS, she’s originally from New York and is a LCSW in that state, so she can provide virtual therapy (a.k.a. Telehealth) in the entire states of California and New York. All in all, an excellent eating disorder resource in San Diego and elsewhere!
Interview with San Diego Eating Disorder Nutrition Therapist Erika Salaman, RDN
Hello all! I had the pleasure of meeting San Diego eating disorder registered dietitian nutritionist Erika Salaman last year, and I continue to collaborate with her in 2019. I was impressed by how compassionate, nonjudgmental, and supportive she is toward her clients. Erika is especially well-versed in the intuitive eating approach—she is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. She also embraces the health at every size (HAES) perspective. Erika especially loves working with LGBTQ+ clients, as well as people of diverse races, ethnicities, body sizes, etc. I think you’ll appreciate her transparency and authenticity about her approach, as well as about her own eating disorder recovery.
"My Eating Disorder Recovery Story": Meet Virtual Nutrition Consultant Ari Snaevarsson
Hello all! For those of you struggling with eating disorders in San Diego and elsewhere, it’s easy to feel hopeless and question whether you can ever recover. I’m here to tell you, yes you CAN recover from an eating disorder and live a life FREE from the burden you’ve been carrying for so long. In order to bring you some hope, I want you to meet Ari Snaevarsson and read about his eating disorder recovery. He is also an author and virtual nutrition consultant, so he may be a helpful resource for you! One thing that I really appreciate about Ari is that he is really honest about how miserable and out-of-control his life was while he was active in his disordered eating behavior. He embraces the intuitive eating approach, which he also advocates in his work as a nutrition consultant. His enthusiasm is infectious!
