Am I Ready for a Binge Eating Coach? 3 Signs That Indicate Readiness for Change
Working with a binge eating coach is about action. You’re in California, NYC, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, Atlanta, wherever, and you’re unsure whether you’re prepared to take the first step on your binge eating recovery journey. I’ve outlined 3 signs that indicate readiness for change.
Sign #1: You’re Tired of the Binge Eating Roller Coaster
Restrict—Binge—Shame Spiral. Repeat. That’s the roller coaster of the restrict-binge cycle. You are SO. OVER. IT. It has been years, even decades, that you’ve been struggling with this pattern. Sometimes the restrict-binge cycle occurs daily. Other times the restriction phase can last months, perhaps even years. Then, stressors piled up, something snaps, and you fell into months and years of binging. Some of you may get rid of the food after you binge. Shame is your constant companion.
Whatever pattern you’re in, you feel EXHAUSTED. Your body, mind, and soul just can’t take it anymore. You’ve kept it a secret for so long that it is eroding you from the inside out. Even if you have told someone you trust, they don’t have any answers. Diets are no longer an option. You’re sitting in your home in snowy Colorado or glittery New York City, and you’re at the end of your rope.
Sign #2: You’ve Tried Everything You Can Think of to Stop
Your binge eating struggles may have began in elementary school. Or in high school, growing up in Chicago, San Diego, or Atlanta. Perhaps going away to college is what prompted the restrict-binge cycle. Whatever launched you into the disordered eating patterns, you’ve tried all kinds of diets and meal plans. You’ve followed influencers and bought books on binge eating. You’re desperate. You’ve tried everything. Nothing worked.
Your pediatrician may have launched it. They told your parents to restrict certain foods from you. A loved one might have taken you to a diet program. You may have received a stimulant prescription. It’s likely that you had some relief. There was a respite period during which you weren’t binge eating. It felt glorious. You couldn’t imagine binging again. Then the unthinkable happened. Slips turned into slides, which turned into full-blown relapses. You’re nearly numb with shame.
Sign #3: You Don’t Know Where to Turn
You’ve tried everything. I mean, everything. Diets and gurus and medication and perhaps even therapy. You’re sitting on the floor, sobbing. Desperate. Hopeless. You need help.
You have searched online for “binge eating support” in NYC, Florida, Colorado, Chicago, California, Atlanta, or wherever you live. Pages of “binge eating programs” come up, some of them close by, some of them far away, and some of them online. Most of them are quite extensive. It would mean hours and hours of time away from your career, your family, and your friends. You can’t imagine leaving your life for weeks, if not months. You’ve worked too long, too hard, to build your life the way you want it. It’s only this eating thing that you can’t lick. You’re a high achiever. It kills you not to be able to fix the binge cycle. You think that there must be another solution, but you don’t know where to go for help.
You’re Ready for a Binge Eating Coach
Okay, you’re ready. It’s obvious to you now.
So, what the heck is a virtual binge eating coach? It’s someone who will help you regain mental and emotional energy by shifting your relationship with food to be fully present in your life. It’s about action. It’s about harnessing your resiliencies and resources that you have cultivated in the successes in other areas of your life and applying it toward binge eating recovery.
What do you want in a binge eating coach? Someone with LOTS of experience, training, and expertise. When you reach out for help in Atlanta, San Diego, Chicago, NYC, or Denver, first ask them how many years they’ve been working with people to help them recover from binge eating. If it’s five years or less, move on to someone else. Second, inquire how much training they’ve had specific to binge eating and eating disorders. Binge eating is a complex issue. That’s why simple diet programs don’t work. You want someone trained extensively in this specific area. Third, find out their educational background. The more education they have in psychology, family therapy, and other mental health fields, the better. Why? Because binge eating patterns not only have to do with behaviors, they involve the context in which they developed. If the binge eating coach avoids contextual factors, then any binge eating interventions won’t work.
