What to Do When You Feel Like Binge Eating
Feeling the urge to binge eat? Does it sneak up on you after work or school when you’re feeling bored, sad, or lonely? Or, does the urge hit you like a tsunami, and you feel flooded, like you’re out of control and you can’t stop your actions. Either way, binge eating can cause a lot of distress, disgust, and shame. It is so painful to live in sun-drenched San Diego and elsewhere while struggling with binge eating. While people are at the beach having fun, you feel trapped and filled with despair.
Learning how to manage the urges to binge eat can be your first step into freedom from this all-consuming behavior. In many ways, binge eating is an avoidance strategy. Eating disorder therapists in San Diego and around the world often consider binge eating as maladaptive coping mechanisms for distress. That means that when you binge eat, you’re trying to help yourself feel better, but it can end up making your life worse. Here are some tips to help you deal with the urges. The these strategies come from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Why It's Awesome to Work with Eating Disorder Dietitians
Thought about seeing an eating disorder dietitian as part of your eating disorder recovery? Not quite sure how they might be helpful for you? Feeling nervous about meeting with someone to talk about food? Whether in San Diego or in other places, it can take a lot of courage to work with an eating disorder dietitian.
Perhaps you had bad experiences with dietitians or nutritionists in the past. Perhaps you feel scared that the person is just going to tell you what to eat without your input. Perhaps you’re worried that the person will put you on a meal plan or a diet that will feel uncomfortable. Perhaps you’re anxious that the dietitian will shame you for what you’re eating—or not eating.
I’ve interviewed top San Diego eating disorder dietitians for them to share WHY it makes a difference to work with one who is trained in eating disorders. These amazing women are not about shaming—they’re about educating, supporting, and empowering.

Top Five Reasons to See an Eating Disorder Therapist
Ever wonder WHY it is important to work with an eating disorder therapist instead of a therapist who works with with more general issues, such as anxiety, depression, and couple/family challenges? I’ve asked three San Diego eating disorder therapists for their thoughts on the matter: Clinical Psychologist Dr. Jennie Wang-Hall, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Christin Conkle, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Liz Bisarya. All three psychotherapists specialize in eating disorders in their San Diego private practices, and they have experience at higher level of care eating disorder treatment centers. Struggling with opening yourself to the possibility of recovery from your eating disorder? A few weeks ago, I attended a San Diego training by the Eating Recovery Center (ERC), which provides eating disorder treatment in centers all over the United States. Its headquarters is in Denver, Colorado, which is where I grew up! :) It’s been fun to attend several of ERC’s annual conferences over the years to get up-to-date training on eating disorder treatment and research (and to visit my hometown as well!!!).

She talked about the importance of understanding the role of bio-temperament in eating disorder treatment. Laura also discussed how improving levels engagement in the world around them helps people recover. She expands on this topic in her interview for this post. Enjoy!
