Overcoming Binge Eating with Eating Disorder Dietitian Kathleen Meehan, MS, RD
You’ve probably noticed that I’m talking about binge eating a lot lately. One reason is because I see so many people suffering from binge eating in my San Diego practice. Binge eating disorder (BED) is when you have uncontrollable urges to eat typically large amounts of food in a short amount of time. Often disassociation and a sense of detachment occurs during the binge. Afterword, you feel overwhelmed with shame and self-loathing. You promise yourself you’ll never do it again, and then you do. It’s such a difficult way to live. Binge eating has nothing to do with willpower, and it isn’t a moral issue. Binge eating disorder is a brain disorder, and you can get treatment for it so you can live a free and fulfilling life.

Social Justice in Eating Disorder Treatment--The Renfrew Center's Paula Edwards-Gayfield, LPC
Today’s blog highlights how eating disorder treatment centers can integrate social justice. Whether in San Diego or elsewhere, it’s vital to acknowledge how racism, homophobia, transphobia, ablism, sexism, fat phobia, etc., intersect to make eating disorder recovery more difficult. I’ve interviewed Paula Edwards-Gayfield, LPC, who is in charge of the The Renfrew Center for Eating Disorders in Los Angeles. She also is the co-chair for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce. I’m excited for you to get to know her and what Renfrew offers with eating disorder treatment.

Freedom from Perfectionism--New Class by Eating Disorder Psychologist Dr Jennifer Douglas
Looking for amazing resources on perfectionism? Check out Dr. Jennifer Douglas, who has a strong presence on Instagram. She is a clinical psychologist who has worked at some of the top eating disorder treatment centers in the United States, including University of California at San Diego Eating Disorders Center and Stanford University Eating Disorders Program. One thing I really appreciate about Jen is that when helping folks with eating disorders free themselves from perfectionism, she takes a culturally sensitive and social justice approach. She loves working with people of diverse body sizes, genders, religions, abilities, ages, countries of origin, and sexual orientations. She used to live in San Diego and now resides in San Francisco. Perfectionism is a common struggle for people with eating disorders, so her class will be especially helpful for you and your loved ones!

How My Freedom from Binge Eating Class Can Help You Redefine Your Relationship with Food and with Your Body
You struggle with binge eating or emotional eating in San Diego or elsewhere. You eat “right” during the day, and then as soon as you get home (or as soon as you put the kids to bed), you head to the refrigerator and the pantry to begin eating. At first you feel relief—like you’ve been holding your breath all day and can finally let it out and gulp in fresh, clean air. Then the numbness or detachment settles over you. It is a welcome respite from the pent-up stress, frustration, and anger. You don’t end the binge until you feel really, really uncomfortable—then the shame seeps in. You can’t believe you did it again. You had promised yourself that you would never binge again—that you would follow your diet or meal plan perfectly and give up binging once and for all. Yet here you are, feeling nauseous, extremely uncomfortable, and hopeless.

Food in Eating Disorder Treatment: Meet Alsana's Director of Culinary Services Jennifer Batchelor
Food is a big part of eating disorder treatment. Whether you receive eating disorder care in San Diego or elsewhere, it is important to work with people and programs that have an intentional nutrition philosophy that integrates with their overarching approach to eating disorder treatment. I had the great experience of interviewing Alsana’s National Director of Culinary Services Jennifer Batchelor. She described how Alsana, an eating disorder treatment program, provides diverse eating experiences that help people recover from eating disorders.

Grappling with binge eating in San Diego is so freaking hard. It consumes your waking thoughts and hijacks your brain. All you want to do is enjoy your life and see the amazing sights in San Diego and elsewhere, but you just can’t seem to turn off the obsessive thoughts, the constant urges, and the shame—and there can be so much shame. I have worked many years with San Diego eating disorder dietitian Amy Ornelas, RD. She is SO GIFTED at what she does—it’s like magic how she helps people recover from binge eating. ARFID and Neurodiversity: Hear from San Diego Therapist Dr. Panicha McGuire
It is so difficult to live in sunny San Diego and have a child who struggles with picky eating and has ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). You just want to go outside and enjoy the beach and the fantastic weather, but you have to worry about your kid’s next meal, next snack, etc. If your child has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), it is even more complicated and stressful. Dr Panicha McGuire, LMFT, is a San Diego psychotherapist who specializes in both children and adults with ARFID (selective eating) and ASD. In this interview, Dr McGuire provides excellent information on how she treats these challenging conditions. She actually was a graduate student of mine back in my former life as an academic in San Diego. I’ve seen her do therapy both live and on video—she is incredibly gifted and her clients love her. Enjoy! :)

Having a ballet background herself, she understands the unique challenges dancers face when they look at mirrors all day and feel pressure to achieve the “perfect dancer’s body.” I’ve been collaborating with Nasira for almost two years, and she is caring, compassionate, and dedicated to help people both in and outside of the dance/ballet world. I look forward to you getting to know her!
